La Rocca di Cerbaia (Tower Ruin) - Cantagallo (PO)

The Rocca di Cerbaia is a military little castle , today a ruin, that is localized to 400 meters height on a dominant hill on the Bisenzio River, in Carmignanello locality, the municipality of Cantagallo, in Province of Prato (approximately 5 Miles from our hotel.) Probably it was built up from "Conti Alberti" to the beginnings of XII century to guard of the road for the Lombardia Region , and used also like their Residence.
Here Adelaide of the Alberti encounter its spouse Ezzelino II da Romano. They daughter, Cunizza da Romano (about which of her Dante Alighieri speack in the Paradise Poem), from the enlivened loving life, lived until mature age; in 1278 she wrote up own testament in this place, after which her news was not had more.
It's probabily that she died in the Rocca and be buried in the contiguous cemetary.
In the 1361 the Alberti will sell the castle to Florence, than it maintained a military garrison, demobilized in the course of the 1400's. From then the building has been abandoned.
About the Rocca di Cerbaia wrote Dante Alighieri in XXXII of Hell Poem from Divine Commedy (vv.40-60) when it narrates the vicissitude of two brothers Napoleone and Alexander of the Alberti, sons of Sir. Alberto of the Alberti. The two people killed themselves mutually for inheritance issues and for this they come confined in the Caina, the infernal place where the traitors of own relatives are found.
Dante tells also the vicissitude of the son of Napoleone, Alberto II, which assassinated the cousinses Orso and their vicissitude is described in the Purgatorio (vv.19-21).
A legend been born to Florence, around XV the century, tells that the poet in a snowy night in winter of the 1285 was found in travel towards Bologna and reached The Rocca ask to the own hospitality for a night to the Sir. Alberti but him gave ita refused to him and so the poet had to repair in the hut of shepherds mails more down; the legend identifies this house with those today existing anchor, but in ruine, localized to the feet of The Rocca.
Of the fortified complex, realized in local sandstone, remain the traces of two town-walls building , the central part, and in the low site there are the rests of a medieval oratory.
In center has found the imposing pentagonal tower (in good part collapsed) with the lookout-post tower in center named "The Mastio", much higher time ago (with rests of windows and slits). It's probable that the building has been reconstructed in the second half of the 1200's, inspiring itself in the forms to the Emperor Castle of Prato.
To the feet of the rocca the Bridge of Cerbaia has found.
